Gold Rate per Gram in Sri Lanka: How It Is Calculated

How the gold price per gram is derived from the international spot price, adjusted for karat purity, and why the price you pay in a jewellery shop is higher.

The gold price per gram starts from the international spot price, which is quoted per troy ounce and converted into grams and local currency. That figure is then adjusted for purity, 22K gold contains 91.6% gold, so its per-gram price is proportionally lower than 24K, and retailers add making charges, any wastage charges and their margin on top of the metal value.

Every gold purchase in Sri Lanka begins with a single number: the price per gram. It appears on shop rate boards, in newspaper listings and in every quotation a jeweller writes out. Yet the figure is not plucked from the air, it is the end of a chain of calculations that starts on the international bullion market.

Understanding that chain lets you judge whether a quoted price is reasonable, compare shops on equal terms and see exactly what you are paying for beyond the metal itself.

From Spot Price to Price Per Gram

Gold is traded globally at a "spot" price quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. One troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams, so dividing the spot price by that figure gives a per-gram price in dollars. Converting at the prevailing exchange rate produces a per-gram price in rupees.

This is why local gold prices move even when nothing changes in the domestic market: both the international spot price and the exchange rate shift continuously. A weaker rupee raises the local price of gold even on a day when the dollar spot price is flat. For current indicative figures, see our gold price in Sri Lanka page.

Adjusting for Purity

The spot price refers to essentially pure gold. Jewellery is rarely pure, so the per-gram price must be scaled by fineness, the proportion of gold in the alloy.

A gram of 22K gold is 91.6% gold, so its metal value is about 91.6% of the 24K per-gram price. A gram of 18K gold, at 75% purity, is worth about three-quarters of the pure-gold figure. Our gold purity calculator performs this conversion for any karat.

Grams and Sovereigns

Sri Lankan and wider South Asian jewellers frequently quote prices per sovereign, locally the pavun, a trade convention equal to 8 grams. A price per sovereign is simply the per-gram price multiplied by eight, so the two quotations are interchangeable once you know the convention. Always confirm which unit a quoted figure refers to before comparing offers.

Why the Shop Price Is Higher

The per-gram metal value is the floor, never the final price. A finished piece of jewellery is priced as metal value plus making charges, plus any wastage charges where the shop applies them, plus the value of any stones, plus applicable fees. Our guide to how gold jewellery is priced breaks each component down, and the jewellery price calculator lets you test a quotation yourself.

The same logic runs in reverse when you sell: buyers of old jewellery typically pay on metal content alone, deducting for testing and refining, which is why resale prices sit below the board rate.

Using the Per-Gram Price When You Buy

Before visiting a shop, obtain the day's per-gram rate for the karat you want from a bank, a bullion source or by phoning a jeweller. At the counter, ask the jeweller to state the weight, the karat, the per-gram rate applied and each charge separately on the invoice. If the metal portion of the quotation is far above the day's rate for that purity, ask why, and get the karat and fineness in writing. A transparent quotation is the simplest protection a gold buyer has.

Frequently asked questions

Why is 22K gold cheaper per gram than 24K gold?

Because a gram of 22K gold contains only 91.6% pure gold, with the rest made up of alloying metals. Its metal value is therefore roughly 91.6% of the 24K per-gram price, before any charges are added.

Do all jewellery shops use the same gold price per gram?

The underlying metal price is broadly common because it tracks the international market, but shops may update their boards at different times and add different margins, making charges and wastage. Comparing the total quoted price across shops is more meaningful than comparing board rates alone.

What is a sovereign in gold pricing?

In the South Asian trade, a sovereign (pavun) is a weight convention of 8 grams. Prices for jewellery such as bangles and chains are often quoted per sovereign rather than per gram.

Where can I find the current gold price in Sri Lanka?

We do not publish price quotations. Our page on how gold prices are calculated explains the method, and for an actual rate you should ask a bank, a bullion source or a jeweller on the day.
