Sri Lanka's gem gravels have long yielded topaz, particularly colourless and pale stones, and the island's white topaz has served as an affordable sparkling gem for generations of local jewellery.

Colours
Natural topaz is most often colourless, pale blue, yellow, golden or brown; pink and red are rare, and the saturated golden-orange to pinkish stones known as imperial topaz are the variety's aristocracy. The vivid blues that dominate modern commercial jewellery are almost invariably produced from colourless topaz by irradiation and heating, sold under trade names describing their depth of colour. Sri Lankan production is associated chiefly with colourless and lightly tinted material from the gravels. Topaz has a bright, slippery lustre that gemmologists learn to recognise, and its crystals can grow very large, which is why enormous faceted topaz specimens appear in museum collections.
Quality Factors
In treated blue topaz, quality is largely a matter of even colour, clean clarity and good cutting, since the material is plentiful and affordable. In natural-colour topaz the calculus changes entirely: imperial golden-orange and especially pink and red stones are rare, priced far above commercial blues, and judged closely on hue, saturation and freedom from brown. Colourless topaz is valued for limpid clarity and precise cutting. Topaz is expected to be eye-clean in nearly all varieties. Because the price gap between natural and treated colours is wide, documentation matters: a laboratory report confirming identity and, where determinable, natural colour is essential for any topaz sold as imperial or pink.
Treatments
Treatment is central to the modern topaz market. Nearly all vivid blue topaz begins as colourless material that is irradiated and then heated, producing stable colours; treated blue topaz is legitimate and inexpensive, but it should always be sold as treated, international trade standards such as CIBJO's Gemstone Book (Blue Book) call for treatments to be disclosed at every stage of sale. Some pink topaz is produced by heating suitable yellowish-brown material. Surface coatings create novelty colours (often sold as mystic topaz) that can scratch or wear off and require gentle care. Certain irradiated stones are held under regulatory control until residual radioactivity decays to safe levels, a well-established safeguard in producing countries. Laboratory testing clarifies identity and treatment for significant stones.
CIBJO’s Gemstone Book, one of the Blue Book standards published by the World Jewellery Confederation, calls for every treatment to be disclosed at each sale, and consumer law in many countries separately requires material facts such as treatment to be disclosed. Origin in Sri Lanka
Brazil is the pre-eminent source of topaz, including the classic imperial material from the Ouro Preto region, with further production from Pakistan, Russia, Nigeria, Madagascar and elsewhere. Sri Lanka's gem gravels yield topaz among their varied contents, primarily colourless to lightly tinted stones recovered alongside sapphire, spinel and zircon. Historically, trade terminology confused matters: various yellow stones from Ceylon were once loosely called topaz whether or not they were the mineral, and the name smoky topaz was long misapplied to quartz. Modern gemmology has tidied the nomenclature, and topaz today refers strictly to the mineral species.
Origin describes where a stone was mined, it is not a grade, and trade terms such as “Ceylon” are origin descriptions, never an automatic premium. A fine stone from elsewhere can outclass a mediocre stone from a famous source; judge colour, clarity, cut and treatment first. Remember also that a laboratory origin determination is an expert opinion based on inclusions and chemistry, not an infallible guarantee, and a seller’s origin claim is not laboratory confirmation. Origin claims belong on the invoice and, for important stones, in a report.
Care
Topaz is hard, 8 on the Mohs scale, but it carries a perfect cleavage, meaning a sharp knock at the wrong angle can split the stone. Treat it as brilliant but brittle: choose protective settings for rings, avoid impacts, and never subject topaz to ultrasonic or steam cleaning. Wash gently in warm soapy water with a soft brush and pat dry. Keep the gem away from prolonged strong heat and sunlight, which can affect colour in some material, particularly brownish and some treated stones. Coated novelty topaz needs extra gentleness, as the surface layer can be scratched or worn. Store pieces individually and have settings checked regularly.

Topaz: frequently asked questions
Is blue topaz natural?
Natural blue topaz exists but is typically very pale; the vivid blues sold commercially are produced from colourless topaz by irradiation and heating. The colour is stable and the stones are genuine topaz, but they must be sold with the treatment disclosed. Their abundance keeps prices modest.
How can I tell topaz from citrine or aquamarine?
Golden topaz and citrine quartz, or pale blue topaz and aquamarine, can look alike, yet they differ in density, refractive index and other measurable properties. A gemmologist or laboratory identifies them conclusively. Historic pieces labelled topaz deserve testing, as older trade names were used loosely.
What is imperial topaz?
Imperial topaz is the trade term for rare natural topaz in saturated golden-orange to pinkish-orange colours, classically associated with Brazil's Ouro Preto mines. Definitions vary somewhat between dealers, so buy stones described as imperial only with laboratory documentation of identity and colour origin.
Why did my topaz chip when other gems have not?
Topaz possesses perfect cleavage: despite its hardness, a blow in the wrong direction can cause it to split or chip. This is a property of the mineral, not a flaw in your stone. Protective settings and careful wear prevent most damage, and a lapidary can often repolish minor chips.
