Windowing

A see-through area in the middle of a poorly proportioned gem.

A window is a washed-out, see-through zone in the centre of a faceted stone, caused by proportions (often a too-shallow pavilion) that let light pass straight through instead of reflecting back to the eye. Windowed stones show less colour and brilliance face-up, which lowers value for otherwise comparable material.
