Extinction
Dark, lifeless areas in a faceted gem face-up.
Extinction refers to areas of a faceted gemstone that appear dark or black face-up regardless of lighting, commonly associated with deep pavilions or dark body colour. Some contrast is normal and can add character; large extinguished zones reduce brilliance and are treated as a cut or material quality issue.
