Ruby
The red gem variety of corundum.
Ruby is red gem-quality corundum, coloured by chromium. All other colours of gem corundum are sapphires. The boundary between ruby and pink sapphire is a matter of judgement and can differ between laboratories, which is why important stones carry a laboratory report naming the variety.
