Corundum
The mineral species that includes sapphire and ruby.
Corundum is crystalline aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃), with a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond among common gems. Red corundum is ruby; all other colours are sapphires, with blue as the default meaning of “sapphire” used alone.
