Refractive index
A measure of how strongly a gem bends light; a key identification property.
The refractive index (RI) measures how much light slows and bends when entering a gem. Each gem species has a characteristic RI range, corundum is about 1.76–1.77, making RI one of the standard non-destructive identification tests performed with a refractometer.
