Glossary term

Specific gravity

A gem’s density relative to water; used in identification.

Specific gravity (SG) is the ratio of a material’s density to that of water. Corundum’s SG of roughly 4.0 makes a sapphire noticeably heavier than a same-sized glass imitation. SG is measured hydrostatically and used alongside RI in gem identification.
