Colour zoning
Uneven distribution of colour within a gemstone.
Colour zoning is the presence of lighter and darker areas or bands of colour within a stone, reflecting changes during crystal growth. Strong zoning visible face-up reduces value; skilled cutting orients zoning to minimise its visual impact.
