Imitation
Any material that merely looks like the gem it represents.
An imitation (or simulant) resembles a gemstone without sharing its composition, coloured glass or synthetic spinel imitating sapphire, for example. Imitations must be disclosed as such. A laboratory report is the reliable way to separate natural stones, synthetics and imitations.
