The gem-bearing gravel layer worked in Sri Lankan alluvial mining.

In Sri Lanka, gem-bearing alluvial gravel, known locally as illam, is the layer of sediment from which most of the island’s gems are recovered, traditionally by pit mining and washing. The gravels concentrate heavy, durable minerals including corundum, spinel and chrysoberyl.
