Data Methodology

Updated:

This page explains how SriLankaJewellery.com handles numeric data, so you can judge for yourself how much weight to give anything on this site.

Gold prices

SriLankaJewellery.com does not currently publish live, indicative or manually compiled gold prices. The site explains pricing methodology and purity calculations without presenting unsourced market quotations.

Earlier versions of this platform showed manually entered reference values with an illustrative-data label. We removed them: a number on a price page gets read as a price however carefully it is labelled, and a figure without a documented source behind it does not meet the standard we apply to other claims. The page How Gold Prices Are Calculated in Sri Lanka now explains the calculation chain (spot price, troy ounce to gram conversion, currency conversion, purity adjustment and retail charges) using symbolic formulas and no market figures. The background is summarised in this editorial note.

If a price dataset is ever introduced, it will meet all of the following before a single number appears: a named, documented source; a stated update process and cadence; timestamps in Asia/Colombo time; and an automatic staleness label (Current within 3 days, Recently updated within 14, Outdated beyond that). This commitment is enforced technically: the build's validators fail if a price dataset is added to the codebase without going through this policy.

Calculators and tools

Our tools run entirely in your browser and compute results only from the values you type in. No tool is prefilled with market data; reference rates must come from you, ideally from a bank, bullion source or jeweller on the day.

What we never do with data

We do not fabricate statistics, invent market data, present static values as real-time feeds, or quote figures whose origin we cannot trace. Where data is missing, the honest answer on this platform is a gap, a label, or a pointer to the responsible authority, not an invented number.
